Deborah Brown American, b. 1955

As a painter of modern life, Deborah Brown documents her surroundings, drawing inspiration from day to day experiences in New York City.  Brown's Shadow Paintings capture the empty streets of her neighborhood in Brooklyn, with gestural figures and architecture offering a sense of warmth to the solitary scenes.

Deborah Brown has lived and worked in New York since 1982. She received a BA from Yale University.  Brown has been a tenured professor at Carleton College and a visiting artist and lecturer at Penn State University, Hunter College, Pace University, Columbia University, Maryland Institute College of Art, Yale University and Art Omi. Her work is included in museum and private collections around the world, including the ICA, Miami, and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine, by donation from the Alex Katz Foundation.
