Martine Poppe’s work is developed from the fluidity between the different materials she employs, negotiating the boundaries between abstraction and representation.
Climate is at the heart of Poppe’s subject matter. Sourcing images and textiles from her surroundings, Poppe digitally processes photographs, twisting the pixels until the original image becomes distorted beyond recognition to echo environmental anxiety. The large format photographs are affixed behind translucent fabric on stretchers, creating a screen that Poppe paints. The original photographs and other surplus materials are later recycled as standing barriers or sculptural objects in the exhibition space.
Martine Poppe (b. 1988, Norway) lives and works between London and Oslo. Poppe graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art MFA in 2013. Her work resides in the collections of UK Government Art Collection (UK), KODE Museums (Norway), the Saatchi Collection (UK), Benetton Collection (Italy), the Kistefos Museum (Norway), NRKs Kunstsamling (Norway), House of St. Barnabas Collection (UK), CCA Andratx (Spain), UCL Art Collection (UK) and Oxford University Collection (UK). In 2015, Poppe was shortlisted for the East London Painting Prize. She was awarded the Juvenarte Price in Norway in 2010 and 2011.
