PIERMARQ* is pleased to present Heroes & Villains, an exhibition of new work by Australian artist, Ces McCully. This is her 3rd exhibition at PIERMARQ* in Sydney.
McCully's visual language is characterized by the use of bold shapes and colour, thought provoking scenes and poignant texts. Her new series, Heroes & Villains, provides a unique commentary on the modern social landscape, exploring themes of motherhood and the narratives we choose to follow. The figurative imagery is inspired by a curious mix of the art of ancient civilisations ignited by travels around Europe and the frescoes of local cathedrals. In McCully’s dynamic style, the influence of Byzantine art blends with nostalgic references to 90s video game graphics. In Neighbourhood Watch, the imaginatively patterned characters are arranged in a dialogue that alludes to folkloric narratives, serving as McCully’s hopeful call to action for critical thinking in a time where black and white thinking is revered.
McCully’s text work explores themes that are simultaneously deeply personal yet familiar, universal thoughts of a collective consciousness. Paintings such as Love Thy Monster and Deeply Flawed People Found Here play with language as a means of communicating profound human experiences with sincerity and humor. Using words as medium, she explores the intricacies and the banalities of modern life, often with a nod to the barrage of mass media-fed information that confronts us daily.
Born in 1982, Ces McCully is an Australian artist from Melbourne, living and working in Albi, Southern France. McCully has exhibited widely across Europe and The US.
