As a painter of modern life, Deborah Brown documents her surroundings, drawing inspiration from her walks around New York City, primarily East
Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where her studio is located. Her Shadow Paintings series during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020 captured the empty streets of her neighborhood in Brooklyn, each with her and her dog Trout's shadows jutting out in the foreground, to enhance the sense of loneliness. Yet, Brown's brightly coloured and highly gestural architectural renders add a warmth to these solitary scenes.
Deborah Brown has lived and worked in New York since 1982. She
received a BA from Yale University Brown has been a tenured professor at Carleton College and a visiting artist and lecturer at Penn State University, Hunter College, Pace University, Columbia University, Maryland Institute College of Art, Yale University and Art Omi. Her work is included in museum and private collections around the world, including the ICA, Miami, and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine, by donation from the Alex Katz Foundation.
