PIERMARQ* is pleased to present: The Dining Room Table, by Chicago-based artist, Thérèse Mulgrew. This is Mulgrew’s first exhibition at PIERMARQ* in Sydney.
The Dining Room Table showcases Mulgrew’s contemporary take on still-life painting, exploring the ritualistic and communal aspects of dining. Creating intimate scenes of opulent spreads and elegant tableware set against rich and textured tablecloths, Mulgrew not only celebrates the aesthetics of dining but also evokes the sensory experiences associated with moments shared around a table. Known for exploring vulnerability, desire, and intimacy, Mulgrew transforms the tablescape into a lush, cinematic exploration of connection and isolation. With diffuse lighting, scenes are bathed in a dreamlike glow and the tablescapes become more than just objects on a surface; drawing you into their intimate stories with a balance of subtly and detail. Glistening wine glasses catch the light like stolen glances, while hands brush against each other in the act of passing a glass or reaching for a plate; the fleeting touches hint at moments of intrigue and longing.
Mulgrew has cultivated a signature style with a recongizable focus on composition and lighting, influenced by film, literature and time spent working in fashion photography, Mulgrew stages and photographs scenes and recreates them in richly pigmented oil paint.
Born 1991 in Dubuque Iowa, Thérèse Mulgrew currently resides in Chicago, IL.
